Flood Recovery & Cleanup Information
As many residents begin cleaning up and returning to their homes, we'd like to share some important information to help with a safe recovery.
Some basic rules
- Remove mud as soon as possible before it dries.
- Wash walls and floors with clean water, then disinfect using 1½ cups of liquid chlorine bleach mixed with 1 gallon of fresh water.
- Never mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaning products. This creates dangerous chlorine gas.
- Clean and disinfect any flooded vent covers, switch plates, and outlet covers.
- Replace any flexible ductwork, including dryer vent connections, that has been flooded.
- Inspect your plumbing, drains, and utility connections for leaks or damage.
- (IF ON A WELL) Have your drinking water tested if there is any possibility it has been contaminated.
Taking your time during cleanup can help prevent costly damage to your home and keep you and your family safe
Health Canada Flood Recovery Resources
The Government of Canada has developed helpful resources to support safe cleanup after flooding.
Flood Cleanup & Indoor Air Quality
Learn how to safely clean your home after flooding, reduce health risks, and prevent mould growth. Health Canada recommends drying your home and belongings as quickly as possible, as mould is much less likely to develop if materials are dried within 48 hours.
Addressing Moisture & Mould in Your Home
This guide provides practical advice on identifying, cleaning, and preventing moisture and mould, including when it may be appropriate to hire a professional for remediation.
Please take your time during cleanup, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, and seek professional assistance if the damage to your home is extensive.
If you need supplies to assist with cleanup, please visit our Support Centre at the Veteran’s Hall. Open Sunday from 7 am to 9 pm and Monday to Friday from 9 am to 7 pm.
Flood Debris Collection
As you clean out your home, please place all flood-damaged debris on your front lawn in one pile.
Please remember:
• Do not place debris on the street or roadway.
• Separate refrigerators and freezers from the rest of your debris pile.
• If you have removed items from your home that you do not want disposed of, ensure they are placed well away from the debris pile and clearly separated so contractors do not remove them by mistake.
The Town is coordinating contractors to collect flood debris. A collection schedule is currently being finalized and will be announced as soon as it is confirmed.
We are also sourcing dumpsters to be placed at key locations throughout the community to provide additional disposal options. More information will be shared once locations and timelines are confirmed.
Landfill Update
We are waiting for water levels to decrease further before repairs can be completed to the landfill access road. Our current goal is to reopen the landfill on Wednesday, pending conditions.
Residents who have already loaded trailers with flood debris will be able to dispose of it at the landfill once it reopens, with disposal fees waived.
Please watch for an official announcement confirming the reopening date and time.
Sandbag Disposal
Please do not dispose of your sandbags at this time.
Information on the proper disposal of sandbags will be provided once we reach the appropriate stage of the recovery process. We appreciate your patience as we work through the community-wide cleanup efforts.
