Flood Recovery Information: Pumping a Flooded Basement Safely

As floodwaters begin to recede, residents may be eager to remove water from their basements. However, pumping a basement out too quickly can cause serious structural damage.

The water surrounding your home is putting pressure on your foundation. If you remove the water inside your basement too quickly, the difference in pressure can cause basement walls or floors to crack or even collapse.

Before You Start

  • Never enter a flooded basement unless you know the electricity has been shut off.
  • Take photos of any damage before beginning cleanup for insurance purposes.
  • Wait until floodwaters around the outside of your home have receded before pumping out your basement.
  • Never use gasoline-powered pumps or generators indoors. They produce deadly carbon monoxide gas.

How to Pump Your Basement Safely

  1. Pump out only 2 to 3 feet of water at a time.
  2. Mark the new water level and wait overnight.
  3. Check the water level the next day.
    • If the water has risen again, stop pumping and wait another 24 hours before repeating the process.
    • If the water has not risen, pump another 2 to 3 feet and repeat the process.
  4. Continue gradually until the basement is completely drained.

After the Water Is Gone

  • Remove mud as soon as possible before it dries.
  • Wash walls and floors with clean water, then disinfect using 1½ cups of liquid chlorine bleach mixed with 1 gallon of fresh water.
  • Never mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaning products. This creates dangerous chlorine gas.
  • Clean and disinfect any flooded vent covers, switch plates, and outlet covers.
  • Replace any flexible ductwork, including dryer vent connections, that has been flooded.
  • Inspect your plumbing, drains, and utility connections for leaks or damage.
  • (IF ON A WELL) Have your drinking water tested if there is any possibility it has been contaminated.

Taking your time during cleanup can help prevent costly damage to your home and keep you and your family safe.
